Archimede Arte methodology
Archimede Arte has built a solid reputation in the 2D and 3D survey of artistic and cultural heritage; the ability in surveying is a main prerequisite for protection and conservation, and whose specificity requires both the ability to integrate different techniques and tools and the ability to know how to read the artistic message of artworks. This has allowed Archimede Arte to receive the prestigious assignment from the ICCD – Central Institute for Catalog and Documentation of the MIBACT to draft the document “Guidelines for the digitization of movable and immovable property”.
Since surveys are carried out with different objectives and on objects with very different dimensions, it is necessary to know how to choose the best tool and use the most suitable parameters for any circumstance. It is no coincidence that we have reported these (and other) considerations in the guidelines that the ICCD of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage makes available to those who want to operate these activities.
In particular, we obtain the best result by integrating all available techniques, with constant attention to innovations of tools to exploit all the opportunities that the new technologies make available; in fact, we use the latest generation of digital cameras, drones, GPS, and laser scanner sensors.
3D LASER SCANNER SURVEYS
The use of laser scanners gives the ability to reach a deep geometric, constructive, and stratigraphic knowledge of assets – a substantial topic in the operations for conservation, cataloging, and promotion. We reach results with precision and rapidity using a millimeter pitch for the surveys and at a speed of a million points per second.
3D Laser scan allows the creation of models of three-dimensional large-size structures, which are fully measurable and help to clarify aspects related to the construction phases and the techniques used and to provide useful information for archaeological interpretation and restoration practice.

3D PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SURVEYS
Photogrammetry is a technique that offers the ability to identify with high accuracy the spatial position of all the points of interest of the object to be digitized, returning a centered image, free from any perspective distortion or volumetric anamorphosis.
This technique, which is complex to use in surveys of surfaces that are too regular or made of highly-reflective materials, was conceived for architectural surveys and nowadays used for topographic surveys very often.
In Archimede Arte, in combination with the 3D laser scanner survey, it is an indispensable cornerstone for the quality of the works.
AEROPHOTOGRAMMETRIC SURVEYS WITH DRONES
It’s a technique used to detect the characteristics and the position of large areas.
Thanks to the evolution of drones and the evolution of sensor miniaturization, it is now possible to bring cameras, thermal or multispectral sensors to unprecedented heights, thus having the chance to collect high-precision datasets for artistic assets with large surface.
STRUCTURED LIGHT LASER RELIEFS
If the surface to be surveyed is very small, very irregular, and an accuracy of up to 0.005 mm / pixel is required, the structured light laser survey is the best technique for, generating a large amount of data, it allows a more effective and accurate reconstruction, and significant noise reduction.
We use Total Stations, Levels, GPS, and GNSS equipment for planimetric and altimetric measurements in surveys for geodetic and industrial monitoring, where they play an important and highly-qualified function. Must-have methods to meet the needs of surveying archaeological sites or historical complexes.
Non-invasive and non-destructive survey techniques to obtain a precise mapping of the temperatures on the walls and their differences.
Thru these surveys, it is possible to identify any presence of humidity, infiltrations, surface detachments, thermal bridges, condensation, and other threats to artworks.
Investigations used to detect discontinuities in walls and floors without acting on the structure and without damaging artworks.
They provide a great knowledge of the archaeological heritage still buried and to have a full view of the areas adjacent to and below prestigious buildings, for example by tracing the presence of metal bodies (e.g. ferrous pipes).
HIGH-RESOLUTION SHOOTING AND 360 ° IMMERSIVE PHOTOS
With motorized panoramic heads, professional cameras, and dedicated optics, we can return gigapixels of entire frescoed walls, single canvases, or details of specific portions.
Using the same technology, we can produce 360° photos which can be used in the creation of virtual tours or the completion of traditional surveys.
